Teaching is giving

Who are our ‘teachers’? Only those we see in school and college?

Not at all. Our parents, environment, friends, family, animals, birds, bees…. almost everything from our surroundings has something to teach us. In fact, we even learn from non-living things. Our biggest teacher is LIFE ! If we reflect on the process of teaching, it’s nothing but ‘Giving’. Our parents give selflessly; Mother Earth gives without expectations.

Many people provide us with different experiences, that enrich our lives. Learning is nothing but these good or bad experiences, received from different people, objects, or our surroundings, that teach us lessons for life. So, each one is a teacher and also a learner.

As teachers, let’s celebrate the joy of Giving . In ancient days, Teaching was supposed to be the highest form of Giving – ‘Shiksha Daan’. In today’s commercialised world, we have lost the real essence of a ‘teacher’. Teaching has become more profession, than passion.

I do agree, today’s teacher faces a lot of challenges, such as teacher-student ratio, salary, respect, job demand and many more. But this profession is our choice, so we actually do not have any alternative other than to give our 100%, as we are dealing with the destinies of the next generation. Along with transferring knowledge, we need to inculcate in our students, skills, attitudes and values for life. With too much of exposure to the internet, media and digital literacy, knowledge is available at their fingertips, but how to use that knowledge? Only a teacher or Guru can guide them. That’s why we cannot entirely substitute a teacher’s physical presence with a computer or a robot.

Teachers are not just teachers; they are the givers, nation-builders , role-models, influencers, leaders, change-makers …our mentors, guides and much more. Let’s make this profession our passion and with all compassion, let’s celebrate ‘Teachers’ Day’ every day. Enjoy the joy of giving!!!
